It's Good To Talk....(Or Is It ?)
After a lot of hard work and no little frustration I'm sure, some brave
souls in the TPF community were able to establish a proper, top-level,
usenet group just for TPF ( comp.os.tpf
). Since then conversation has all but died in this forum and
on every other one that I've ever visited. Even the ones at ACP/TPF
Today's site, which have made the best headway so far, are still a long
way from being the vibrant online community that some of us might have
hoped for.
So why is this ? We've decided to try and solicit your opinions
and so far this is what you've said: (all responses are, as always,
treated in the strictest confidence)

| " TPF, compared to other technologies, has a rather small community with two
main populations: new TPFers, < 5 years, who may or may not stick it out
(I'm in this group), and "lifers". New TPFers don't want to talk about their salary or expertise because we have little of either. Lifers have
often worked at a couple of shops and know enough people in the industry so
that the "six degrees of separation" rule rings true. In TPF, because of the small number of shops and the small cadre of industry insiders
who really run the show, it really seems true that "the toes you step on today
are connected to the ass you have to kiss tomorrow." Thus TPFers are shy about revealing salary info or technical opinions, even in a confidential
setting, because chances are your boss, your former boss, his girlfriend at
another host, the guy who got the promotion you wanted, and his cousin Vinny in systems are all listening." |
